The sudden death of Joseph Chayer,
which occurred in Brightlook Hospital,
St. Johnsbury, about noon Wednesday,
was a great shock to his family,
and many friends. Mr. Chayer had been
in failing health for a long period
and had been in Brightlook Hospital
twice, but the seriousness of his
illness was not realized by his family.

Funeral services will be held at the
late residence Saturday afternoon,
with interment at Lyndon Center.

Joseph H. Chayer was born in Cambridge,
this state on March 19, 1852, the son
of John and Margaret Ryan Chayer. His
entire life was spent in Cambridge,
Shelburne, and Lyndon, where he followed
the blacksmith by trade until his health
failed. He carried the mail between
the post office and depot for some years,
and in all his work he was a painstaking,
conscientious workman. The deceased was
a member of the Methodist Church here.

Mr. Chayer's marriage to Miss Mary Bushey
took place in Shelburne on Jan. 22, 1872.
Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs.
Chayer: Miss Dema Chayer of New York city,
Charles who died in infancy, Albert who
was killed about eighteen years ago in a
railroad accident, Leon of Wilder, Miss
Mary Chayer of Des Moines, Iowa, Miss
Grace Chayer and Miss Rose Chayer who
live at home, Mrs. Eva Stahl of Arcata,
Calif., Rev. Charles C. Chayer of St.
Johnsbury, and Mrs. Belle Keyes of
Auburndale, Mass. With the exception of
Mrs. Stahl, who spent part of the summer
at home, the other children are all
expected for the funeral. There are
twelve grand-children. Miss Bertha
Chayer of Lyndonville, Robert Chayer
of Wilder, Homer, Marion, Pearl, Roland
and Fern Stahl, Stanley and Kenneth Keyes,
Pauline, Vernabelle and Edith Chayer
of St. Johnsbury. Mr. Chayer is also
survived by three brothers and two sisters,
John Chayer of Waterville, Julian of
Enfield, N. H., Frank and Miss Kate,
and Miss Ross Chayer was a highly respected
citizen, a kind husband and father and
his bereaved family have the sympathy of
a wide circle of friends in their affliction.
