He was born in Madisonville, KY on November 11, 1920 to the late Hobert Shelton Sr. and Emma (Lewis) Shelton.
Hobert graduated from South Bend Central High School and Fisk University in Nashville, TN. He also served in the United States Army as a Sergeant of the Motor Patrol. After the U. S. Army, Hobert worked for Studebaker for 20 years as a Union Stewart. He then went to work for AM General as a General Manager at the LaPorte, Indiana plant. Hobert loved hunting and fishing at his lake house in Michigan.
Hobert is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Early (Owens) Shelton and daughter, Becky Miller, of Kansas City along with several grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.
Hobert was preceded in death by his son, Hobert Shelton III, and sister, Francis McShane.
