Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Civil War first as Major of the 8th Missouri Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 27th Missouri Volunteer Infantry, and finally as the Picket Officer on the staff of Major General Francis P. Blair Jr. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery leadership on May 22, 1863 during the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi. His citation reads "Seized the colors when the color bearer was killed and bore them himself in the assault". His Medal was awarded to him January 31, 1894, nearly 31 years later. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". Towards the end of the war he was present when Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston's surrendered his forces in North Carolina, and participated in the Grand Review of the Union Army in Washington, DC. He remained in the Regular Army, being appointed as Captain and commander of Company E, 39th United States Regular Infantry. His war-time service had brought him brevets of Major and Lieutenant Colonel in the Regular service, but did not save him from being cashiered from the Army in 1868. He spent the rest of his days as a United States Customs Official and a Pension Bureau clerk before passing away in Washington, DC in 1922.
