Nevada Verla Jean Stevens, 71 , died Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, November 27 at Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada, with Pastor David Burling officiating. Burial of the cremains will be held in the Ames Municipal Cemetery at a later date. Verla Jean was born on January 3, 1933 in Baxter to Herman B. and Rose Anna (Adams) Breer. She attended Milford School. Verla Jean was married to Donald W. Stevens on June 24, 1949 in rural Cambridge. She retired in 1995 from Home Health Care. Verla Jean was a volunteer for Community Life Services and enjoyed being with her family, growing roses, doing crossword puzzles and collecting salt and pepper shakers. Verla Jean is survived by her husband Donald W. Stevens of Nevada; two sons, Darrell Stevens of Nevada and Bill Stevens of Runnells; two daughters, Carol Bappe of Colo and Bev Fiscel of Cumming; one brother, Jerry Breer of Missouri; three sisters, Mary Thomason of Mitchellville, Wilma Pearson of Newton and Mildred Breer of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Verla Jean was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, a sister and two grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established. Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with the arrangements.
