Obituary from the Bremen Enquirer, Bremen, Indiana, May 19, 1888 for Gottfried Barnhart:
"Many of the citizens were greatly surprised Tuesday evening by learning that Gottfried Barnhart, residing in the southeast part of town, had suddenly departed this life. Mr. Barnhart and wife purchased property in Bremen and moved from their farm in Madison township here, a little over a year ago, since which time Mr. Barnhart has been enjoying good health and has been on our streets almost every day. About six o'clock Tuesday evening, just as he was commencing his supper, he suddenly jumped from the table and ran to the door when he commenced to suffer great agonies and was unable to get his breath. Dr. Younkmau, who happened to be near at hand was called in and did all he could to relieve the sufferer from his agonies. Mr. Barnhart was 72 years old and had been in the best of health. He leaves a wife, five children, two brothers and two sisters to mourn his departure. Funeral took place at the German Emmanuel church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. Mayer."
