Funeral services for Washington Wilson (Wash) Simpson, 86, 1438 Tokay Avenue, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in West Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Fisher Blanton, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Carlsbad Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Dick Floyd, Dwight Lee, Bud Lunsford, R.U. Boyd, Paul O'Neal and Travis Ives.
Simpson, a pioneer Eddy County rancher and a former Texas Ranger, died Monday night in a Carlsbad hospital where he had been a patient for the past two months. He had been in failing health for the past year and during the past six months he had been under doctor's care.
He and his son, W.W. (Sonny) Simpson, operated the Rafter S. Ranch and a riding academy in La Huerta which he homsteaded in 1903.
Simpson had been a resident of Eddy County for 69 years.
He was born Oct. 4, 1872 in Leon County, Tex., and ranched, served with the Texas Rangers and worked for the Santa Fe Railroad before coming to Carlsbad in 1901. He married the former Miss Maude Smith of Amarillo in 1900.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maude Simpson; one son, W.W. (Sonny) Simpson of Carlsbad; one daughter, Mrs. J.W. Laman of Carlsbad; three sisters, Mrs. T.H. Wells of Amarillo, Mrs. A.J. Lewis of Canadian, Tex., and Mrs. E.M. Alexander of Menard, Tex.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
