United States Navy Admiral. A graduate from the United States Navel Academy class of 1887, during the Spanish American War he served aboard the USS Texas and participated in the Battle of Santiago, Cuba. From 1901 to 1903, he served as aide to the Commander-in-Chief North Atlantic Fleet. During World War I, he commanded the Battleship USS Oklahoma (BB-37) and then served as United States High Commissioner in Turkey, from 1919 to 1927. In 1927, promoted to Rear Admiral he assumed command of the Asiatic Fleet. The Destroyer USS Bristol (DD 453) was commissioned and named in his honor on October 22, 1941.
