HEALTH: Orla had good health through the years. In 1964 she and her husband adopted their first child, Loni Louise. Almost five years after Loni's birth, she gave birth to a daughter, Donna Louise, in 1968 and had a healthy pregnancy. In 1995, at age 70 after a routine mamogram, calcifications were found throughout her left breat and a biopsy followed. A diagnosis of DCIS, Ductal Carcinoma In Situ, where non-invasive cancer cells are found within milk ducts. She made the choice to have a complete mastectomy and reconstruction. It was considered a Stage 0 cancer and therefore no chemotherapy or radiation was needed.
After losing a lot of weight and having little appetite, in May of 2003, Orla was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. She took low doses of chemotherapy, wearing a chemo pump and having radiation. She was thankful not to lose her hair through this process. However, she succumbed to the cancer, Sunday, March 21, 2004, at the age of 78.
