"The Kindred Venturers, The History and Genealogy of Peter Barnes (1744-1814) and Related Families" by Shirley Moore Barnes (published 1993). Page 3-33. He was the fifth child of Robert and Lois (Porter) Barnes. He married about 1770 to Sophia Inman. Peter died of a stroke of lightning, while visiting his son, Henry Barnes, near Wooster, Ohio, 29 April 1814. In 1970, the graves of Henry and Jane were located in the old West cemetery on the hill facing Henry's home. A very small shaped tombstone of grey stone was also discovered nearby with the initials "P.B." clearly indicated. There were no other inscriptions or marks on the stone. The picture of this stone on page 30 of the referenced book. (Note: when the cemetery was read in 2011 by the Wayne County Genealogy Society, the stone could not be located).

In this book there is a copy of a familly record written by Phoebe (Bouton) Barnes that indicates Peter and Sophia (Inman) Barnes had the following children: Airy born April 6, 1771, Athelia born May 2, 1773, Sophia born May 16, 1777, Robert born May 3, 1780, Henry born March 1, 1783, Rachel born December 14, 1785.

To honor Revolutionary War patriot, Peter Barnes, in August 2016, a descendant placed a gravestone in the area where the old stone may have been. It is unknown the exact date and death place of Sophia.
