PIONEER MERCHANT HEADS DEATH CALL

JACOB A. CARPENTER, AGED 82 YEARS, WELL KNOWN RETIRED MERCHANT EXPIRES.


Jacob Anderson Carpenter, aged 81 years, 9 months and 25 days. died at 8:15 o'clock last night of heart failure following an attack of latrippe and illness of long standing. Death occurred at the home of his son, William E. Carpenter, 121 East National avenue.

The deceased man was born in Bedford county, Pa., February 28, 1831. When nine years of age his father moved to Indiana, settling at Cloverland, Clay County. Here he grew to manhood and February 1st, 1851 was married to Evelyn Grass. To this union was born two children, William E. and Ernest, who died at the age of nine years.

Mr. Carpenter engaged in the flour milling business at Cloverland in partnership with John G. Acklemyer and Washington Eppert, building the first mill at that place. He later disposed of this business and engaged in the general merchandise business in Cloverland with T. M. Hoskins and later with F. J. S. Robinson. In 1977 he disposed of his interest to Mr. Robinson and moved to Barzil, to enter in the dry goods business in partnership with J. M. Hoskins. He later retired from business on account of ill health, for years suffering greatly from rheumatism. His wife died July 3rd 1903 after which time he has lived with his son. He is survived by his son William E. Carpenter and grandsons Jay V., Guy O., Don P., Van W. Carpenter and Mrs. Walter Acheson, who was raised by him, occuppying almost a daughter's place and her two children, Walter and Edward. He has eight brothers and sisters, two of them have passed before him, William H. Carpenter and Maria A. West. He is survived by one brother, W. S. Carpenter of Cloverland and five sisters, Mrs. Eve Ellen Hoskins, Brazil; Mrs. William Ferrell, of Glen; Mrs. John A. Falls, of Cloverland, Mrs. Laura Robinson, of Cloverland and Mrs. Nettie Miller of Brazil.

Funeral services will be held at the residence, No. 421 E. National Ave., at 2:00 P. M., December 24th. Interment in Cottage Hill Cemetery. The remains may be viewed from 10:00 to 1:00 o'clock by friends who are unable to attend the funeral services.
