George B. Hill, Esq. (1821-1906)

Mr. George Hill, father of our townsman W. H. Hill, died at his home at Sunbury, Pa., on Monday, March 19, at the age 85 years.


Mr. Hill was born in Lycoming County, August 13, 1821, the son of Daniel Hill and Susannah Truckenmiller.


After acquiring an education, he began studying law at Milton under James Pollock who later became the Governor of Pennsylvania. He was admitted to the bar in 1848, and entered at once into practice at Selingsgrove where he remained until 1858 when he moved to Sunbury and there he remained ever since. He was recognized as a lawyer of ability and a citizen of high repute.


Mr. Hill was a prominent Mason and was prominently identified in religious matters. He was a member of the Reformed church. He served as an Elder of the church for 50 years and was Superintendent of the Sunday School for 30 years.


He was first married at Selingsgrove in 1848, to Martha C. Buehler who died in 1870.


In 1871, he married Sue E. Kerlin, of Middletown, who, besides the following children, survives him, namely: Ferdinand K., Postmaster at Sunbury; Mary S., wife of Dr. J. B. Gerhard, of Harrisburg;

William H. of Punxsutawney, and Charles H. of Philadelphia.
