Dewey was an ex-prisoner of war. He was a Japanese prisoner of war in the Philippines for 3 1/2 years. He survived the Bataan Death March and helped establish the American ex-POW Chapter I, of which he was a lifetime member. He had received two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, U.S. Presidential Citation (Oak Leaf), Philippines Presidential Citation, American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, Bataan Philippines Defense Medal, Liberation of Philippines Medal, Philippine Independence Medal and Honorable Service Lapel Button.

Dewey was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Pauline Spruiell; and a daughter, Mary Ellen Wyatt. He was a beloved husband, father, papaw and a friend to many.
