Charleroi Youth Meets Death When Struck By Motorcycle
Peculiar Accident Occurs on Charleroi-Monessen Bridge

Body Hurled Into River
Body Recovered by Searchers-Motorcyclist Arrested and Placed Under Guard at Charleroi-Monessen Hospital

In one of the most peculiar accidents that has happened in the vicinity in years, Norman R Brown of Charleroi was hurled to his death when struck by a motorcycle driven by Andy Backala on the Charleroi-Monessen bridge Saturday evening at about 5:15
Young Brown was employed as a test boy in the laboratories of the Pittsburgh Steel Co., at Monessen and was on his way to work, riding a bicycle. He was on the right side of the bridge and Backala was on his left. Brown was struck on his left and was hurled over the five foot rail of the bridge into the water 50 feet below. His body rose to the surface once but it cannot be determined whether he was dead before he struck the water. The bicycle was smashed but it remained on the bridge. Backala was thrown from his machine but in a frightened state he rose to his motorcycle and preceded to Charleroi where he sought medical attention at the office of a local physician.
Brown's body was brought up with hooks at 7:30 Saturday evening by Walter Reeves and Guy Woodward, and was taken to the morgue of Lawrence B. Frye , it was later taken to the home on Fallowfield avenue. The body showed a scalp wound on the forehead and injuries on the left hip.
The police here were notified at once and a search for Backala was immediately started. After investigating and hunting for about an hour and a half, Backala was arrested at Tenth street and Lincoln avenue by Policeman Murphy and Detective Wright about 8 o'clock. He was taken to the local police station and later taken to the Charleroi-Monessen hospital. His left shoulder was dislocated but no other injuries were received. Guards were placed over him at the hospital but he will leave there today.
Norman R Brown was born on March 19, 1898 and is the only son of Mr. and Mrs.Norman C. Brown of this place. He was working during his summer vacation and would have been a junior in the local high school this fall. He was an active member of the Methodist church of this place. He was a young man of sterling character and was very popular in local and neighboring social circles. He was a member of the newly begun Belvidere Club of young men of this place and was well known all along the valley. He has three sisters, Mrs. James Jones of Belle Vernon and Vexilla and Ona at home.
