JAMES FESPERMAN, AGE 55: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Charlotte Observer, The (NC) - Tuesday, October 4, 1988

Deceased Name: JAMES FESPERMAN, AGE 55

James Fesperman loved to watch the birds around his Hopedale Avenue home in Myers Park.
But he wasn't content with just watching.
About two years ago, he began raising he own birds - first finches, then
cockatiels, eventually English parakeets.
When Mr. Fesperman died Saturday, Oct. 1, 1988, at age 55, more than 150
brightly colored parakeets inhabited his home.
''We had just gotten into them,'' said his wife, Annette Bullard Fesperman. ''We were extending our garage so we could go ahead and increase the number
of breeders we had. We have cages inside the birdhouse and then an open aviary where they could fly into the sun and light.''
Mr. Fesperman had served as president of the Charlotte Metrolina Cage Bird
Society since earlier this year, his wife said. The group has about 25
members, she said.
A Korean War veteran who served in the Navy, Mr. Fesperman retired from the U.S. Postal Service in July after 35 years. He was a member of the National
Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 545. A Charlotte native, he was a
member of the Back Creek ARP Church.
Mr. Fesperman, who graduated from Long Creek High School just before the
Korean War began, had lived most of his life in rural north and northeast
Mecklenburg, Annette Fesperman said.
''He used to raise show chickens, bantams, I think,'' she said. ''He really liked the outdoors and nature. He liked our native birds. We'd sit out and
watch them.
''Then he said he was going to get a few finches. They breed so fast, we
ended up with a hundred.
''We had just started breeding (parakeets). We didn't have any real good
stock yet. It takes a while.''
What's it like living with so many birds?
''It can be noisy, especially in the mornings and afternoons,'' Annette
Fesperman said. ''Apparently it's native to them to gather and they chirp
right much in early morning and afternoon. That's when they feed, too.''
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Trinity United Methodist Church,
with burial in the church cemetery. McEwen Funeral Home, Charlotte Chapel, is in charge.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are: son, James Edward ''Eddie''
Fesperman of Harrisburg; brother, Bobby Fesperman of Plantation, Fla.;
sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Barkley and Mrs. Peggy Guinn.
Memorials can be made to Heineman Research Center, 1320 Scott Ave.,
Charlotte, N.C. 28204.
