Valerie S. Leavens
PAXINOS — Valerie S. Leavens, 93, of 122 Tulip Road, died at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, in her residence.
She had been in ill health for the past year.
She was born in Ranshaw, June 17, 1920, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Dzienisiewicz) Bzura.
Valerie lived in Ranshaw until her marriage in 1942. She then moved to Shamokin until 1958 when she and her husband and children moved to Meadowview.
She worked at Michael's House of Fashion from 1970 through 1980.
On April 18, 1942, at Fort Anniston, Ala., she married Robert J. Leavens, who preceded her in death Oct. 23, 1978.
She attended St. Anthony Parochial School in Ranshaw and graduated from Coal Township High School.
She was a devout Catholic and member of Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church, Elysburg.
She was an active member of Elysburg Senior Action Center, where she held the positions of secretary, vice president and president (10 years).
Valerie was an avid reader and enjoyed bowling, making crafts, playing pinochle, entertaining and traveling.
Survivors include four sons, Robert Leavens and his wife, Sheryl, of Nags Head, N.C., Joseph Leavens and his wife, Anna Marie, of Elysburg, James Leavens and his wife, Cheerlee, of York, and Michael Leavens and his wife, Claire, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Theresa Leavens, at home; six grandchildren, Kimberly Leavens, Leanne Werner and her husband, Sean, Matthew Leavens and his wife, Hollie, Christopher Leavens and his wife, Adriana, Nicholas Leavens and Elizabeth Leavens; four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Sonja and Anthony Leavens, and Heidi Werner; a sister, Sister Mary Leona Bzura of the Felician Order of Sisters, Coraopolis, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Henry, Edward, Leo, Stanley, Frank and Albert Bzura; four sisters, Jean Callahan, Marie Chaplin, Alma Kelcziewski and Mildred Forest, and a grandson, Robert Leavens.
Inurnment in All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap. Leonard J. Lucas Funeral Home, Ltd., 120 S. Market St., Shamokin, has charge of arrangements.
