Gerald graduated from Afton Central School in Afton, New York. He excelled at sports and was a member of the school basketball team. After graduation he was a member of the Legion basketball team and a member of the Rod and Gun Club.
He and Harriet were married in April, just weeks before his demise.
From their home on Gerald's family's farm, two miles north of Afton, the newlyweds heard a fire alarm and went to the scene as spectators. They walked across a field toward the fire and came upon a fence. Gerald lifted a downed wire to help his wife across and was electrocuted.
Gerald was survived by his wife, his parents, five sisters, and two brothers.
