Arnold H. Fort, 72, of rural Houston, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Community Memorial Hospital of cancer.

Arnold was born June 21, 1929, at home on Garvin Heights, Minn., to Calvin and Emma (Rossin) Fort. Arnold was united in marriage on June 8, 1951, to Janice Henderson of Winona. This marriage was blessed with six children, ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He enlisted in the Army in Feb. 1946. After basic training at Fort Belvor, Va., he was assigned to the 127th AB Engineer Battalion, Company B. As a part of the 11th Airborne Division, he went to jump school and heavy equipment operation at Sendhi, Japan, and was stationed at Saparro, Hokido, Japan. Arnold was discharged in August 1947.

Returning home, he farmed with his brother, Donald, on Pleasant Ridge, Minn. He then bought a farm by Ridgeway, Minn., where he farmed until retiring in 1991. His retirement years were spent enjoying his motorhome, hunting and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janice; six children, Linda (Ried) Church of Minnesota City, Minn., Randy (Spring) Fort of Naples, Idaho, Bruce (Linda) Fort of Houston, Minn., Gary (Cindy) Fort of Minnesota City, Minn., Rhonda (Louis) Literski of Winona, and Robin (Lisa) Fort of Dakota, Minn.; ten grandchildren, Rusty and Jared Church, Hollie Literski, Jeremiah, Melissa, Jason, Benjamin, Megan, Michael and Timothy Fort; one great-grandchild, Samantha; three brothers, Donald Fort of Houston, Minn., Earl (Marion) Fort of Winona, and Gene (Nancy) Fort of Owensboro, Ky.; three sisters, Blanch Malusky of Festus, Mo., Catherine (Jerry) Bjerke of Apple Valley, Minn., and Mary (Par) Peterson of Eden Prairie, Minn.; a brother-in-law, John Beck of Winona; and 21 nieces and nephews.

Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Emma Fort; a bother, James D. Fort; and a sister, Delores Beck.

Funeral services for Arnold will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Winona, with the Rev. David Pries officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, then again from 12:30 p.m. until time of 1:30 p.m. Monday services at the church.

Casket bearers are Rusty and Jared Church, Jason, Wesley, Benjamin and Jeremiah Fort.

There will be military burial rites conducted at Woodlawn Cemetery.
