Isaac Larrance married Elizabeth Ellis on Sept. 18, 1833 in Indiana. She was the daughter of John and Phebe (Nordyke) Ellis. Their three children maintained the name was properly spelled as 'Lawrence'.

In 1855 the family was living in Morrisville, Hendricks County, Indiana where he was the postmaster. At that time, the postmark on a letter had to be written by hand and the name of the town was lengthy. Isaac decided to shorten the name, per town approval, and his daughter, Anna, suggested the name 'Amo' since she was studying Latin. Approval was given.

Only large maps were available for Postmasters to use for reference. Issac put together and published a pocket sized "Larrance's Post-office Chart and Maps" showing counties and county seats. In 1858, President Abraham Lincoln wrote a testimonial of an early copy for Isaac: "Having hastily examined 'Larrance's Post-office Chart' and considered the principle upon which it is arranged, I think it will prove a great convenience to Post-Masters and others whose business lead them to search out particular localities upon maps." A treasured document by the family!

Recently an 1866 copy of this book went on sale on the Internet and the item was priced at $1,750.00.
