Edward James Bergin, age 86, passed away on March 25, 2014 at Silver Ridge in Gretna NE. He was born in Sutton, NE on August 8, 1927 to John Phillip Bergin and Bernice Ann (Real) Bergin. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father Leon Crawford; his daughter Kathy; daughter-in-law Charlotte; his brothers John, Lawrence and Paul; and his sister Mary Ann Monk. He is survived by his wife of 61 years JoAnn (Langenberg); son Tim and wife Barb Steiner, granddaughters Kate and Sarah of Ames, IA; son Dan, grandchildren Alexandra and Matt of Rockvale, TN; daughter Karin and husband Tom Renard, grandchildren Tyler (Lindsey), Tisha Choitz (Michael) (great-granddaughter Bergin), and TJ; son Tom and wife Kim, grandsons Sean, Patrick, Daniel and Jacob of Riverton, WY; daughter Colleen and husband Mark Schulz, grandchildren Hayley, Madison and Jaxon of Bixby, OK; daughter Mary and husband David Stringfellow, grandchildren Bridget, Meghan, Molly, James and Erin of Denham Springs, LA; daughter Beth and husband Todd Carlson, grandchildren Lukas and Jamie of Gretna, NE; son John and wife Fiona, grandchildren Cosette, Claire and Collin of Chicago, IL; and daughter Carol of Moreland, KS and grandson Michael of Omaha, NE; Steve Bataglia and numerous nieces and nephews. He graduated from Holy Name High School in 1945 and joined the Navy for 4 ½ years where he served in WWII. He married JoAnn on October 25, 1952 in Omaha, NE. In 1956 they moved to Kansas where they lived in Great Bend and Holyrood and returned to Omaha in 1981. Ed worked and retired from Northern Natural Gas and Peoples Natural Gas after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent DePaul Society, American Legion Post 200, VFW Post 2503 and Blind Veteran's Commission. After retirement Ed volunteered at the St. Vincent DePaul Family Shelter, Blind Commission, and the Omaha VA. He enjoyed coaching many children's sports, golfing and spending time with his family. His body has been donated to the Nebraska Anatomical Society. The family will receive friends at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 508 West Angus, Gretna NE Thursday, March 27 at 6:30pm in the church entry with a Prayer Service and Rosary following at 7:15pm. FUNERAL MASS will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Gretna, NE Friday, March 28 at 11am with a luncheon to follow. Memorials to Kathy Bergin Schiltz Memorial Scholarship, Hoxie High School KS.
