Alexander's father, Hugh Grant, was born in Maryland but came to Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania at an early age and became a Miller by trade. He owned and operated a mill as well as the owner of 187 acres of land, which is now in the heart of Pittsburgh, PA. He exchanged that property for 400 acres east of Grove City, Ohio. In 1803 he brought his family to their new home and was one of the first men to locate in Jackson Twp, Franklin Co., Ohio. In December 1806 he was killed when a branch of a tree he was sawing off broke hit him in the chest, killing him instantly. The location of his grave is not known. He married Catherine Barr (1770-1836) while in Pennsylvania. The couple had 6 children:
Alexander (1792-1834), Jacob (1794-1814), Isabella Wood (1796- bf 1880), Nancy M. (1799-1873, Mary "Polly" Edwards (1804-1861) and Hugh, Jr. (1807-1883)
