Ralph A. Barnes, 89, retired banker and former LDS mission president, died at his home Jan. 10, 1992, of natural causes.

He was director for more than 20 years at Barnes Banking Co., which was founded in Kaysville in 1891 by his grandfather, John R. Barnes. He also worked as treasurer and loan officer at Deseret Federal Savings and Loan Association.In 1973, Mr. Barnes and his wife, Hettie, were called to the Italy Rome Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He later served as patriarch-at-large for the church in Italy.

Mr. Barnes served a mission to eastern Canada from 1923 to 1925; coached an all-church championship basketball team, was president of the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association and later first counselor in the bishopric of the Wasatch Ward, Highland Stake; and was bishop of the Grant 4th Ward, Grant Stake.

Funeral will be at noon Wednesday in the Highland Park Ward chapel, 2535 S. Douglas St. (1250 East). Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, and one hour before services Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
