Richard Delbert "Dick" Earle, 86, a well-known auto dealer, and a resident of Elkins, departed this life Sunday morning, April 27, 2014, in Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center at Elkins.
He was born Saturday, Feb. 18, 1928, at Parkersburg, a son of the late Ronald Delbert "Pete" and Kathryn Elizabeth Cain Earle.
Surviving are his loyal companion of 44 years, Beverly "Jane" Smith of Elkins; one aunt, Virginia Earle Isner and husband, Russell, of Crozet, Va.; and cousins, Margaret Ann Andrews and David Isner and wife, Jenny, all of Virginia, Jeffrey Baker, Susan Annunziata and Nancy Berger, all of New York.
Preceding him in death was one aunt, Margaret Baker.
He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1945. He had worked for his family's meat market, the former Earle's Market, which was founded in 1915 by his grandparents, delivering groceries and goods on his bicycle. He joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, serving at Dover, Del. Upon returning to his hometown of Elkins, he owned and operated "Dick's Auto" for more than 60 years. He was a former Elkins City councilman, former president of the Tygarts Valley National Bank and was a member of the Elkins Lodge 1135, B.P.O.E. He owned many collectible automobiles throughout his career and was well-versed in the car enthusiast world.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home Thursday, May 1, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Peter A. Vial and the Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate, and interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins, where H.W. Daniel's Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors.
The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Hospice Care Corp., 169 Diamond St., Elkins, WV 26241, the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, 450 Randolph Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 or the charity of your Choice.
