Lloyd G. Backart, age 90, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2014 in Albuquerque, NM.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 70 years, Eleanor, three children, Janice Bernson and Rudi Owens of New Mexico and Steve Backart of Illinois, his sister, Judy Stonehouse of Florida, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Lloyd was born on August 5, 1923 in Buffalo, New York to Lloyd C. Backart and Frances C. Sonke.
Lloyd graduated from Godwin Heights High School in Grand Rapids, MI and attended Michigan State University prior to enlisting in the United States Army. A veteran of World War II, Lloyd served in the South Pacific and earned two Bronze Stars. His unit, Company L of the 383rd Regiment of the 96th Infantry Division, was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for actions on Okinawa Island.
After the war, Lloyd devoted his career to the material handling industry. Lloyd began his employment at Rapistan Corporation, a company founded by his father. Lloyd rose to be a Vice President at Rapistan and went on to complete his profession with the American Chain and Cable Company. Lloyd is a former president of the Material Handling Institute, a trade organization. Lloyd retired in 1986. Throughout his lifetime, Lloyd made friends in many communities he called home, including Grand Rapids, MI, Seattle, WA, Birmingham, MI, Westport, CT, Newport Beach, CA, Stuart, FL, Dunwoody, GA and most recently, Albuquerque, NM.
While in Albuquerque, Lloyd was active in Kiwanis International and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. Lloyd is warmly remembered for his outgoing personality, excellent sense of humor and his ability to make friends wherever he was.
Lloyd will be interred in a private ceremony with full military honors at Santa Fé National Cemetery, Santa Fé, NM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in his memory be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico.
