Wife of William Elbridge McKnight. Daughter of Louis Van Buren Turner and Betsy Ann Credicott.

The Sabetha Herald, Wednesday, Feb. 23, 1949
Mrs. W. E. McKnight, who had been in ill health for several months, passed away at her home early last Wednesday, Feb. 16. It was known for some time that her condition was incurable. All medical skill and tender care could do for her was to ease her suffering.
Adella, daughter of Louis Van Buren Turner and Betsy Ann Credicott Turner, was born at LaPorte City, Iowa, 77 years ago. The family moved to Sabetha when she was a very small child and practically all of her life was spent in Sabetha, where she attended school and was graduated with the class of 1889.
Her mother owned and operated a millinery business in Sabetha for 25 years and the daughter was her mother's able assistant.
From her youth she knew practically everyone in the community, and she has always taken an active part in religious, civic and cultural affairs.
After her marriage in August 1899 to William Elbridge McKnight affectionately known as "Berry," they established their present home which has since been a center of cordial hospitality for all groups and individuals. Their friends found welcome on all occasions, clubs and church groups found a meeting place and few who ever left Sabetha and returned to visit failed to make a visit to the McKnight home. Many made the home their headquarters and found a royal welcome.
The McKnights had no children of their own but took a special interest in young people, giving substantial amount to several in obtaining an education. They took into their home Mary Christianson, now Mrs. Don Cruse, daughter of a former Congregational pastor here when the father was ill and much of her life was spent in their home. She was like a daughter to them.
For 47 years, Mr. McKnight was an aged in the clothing business in Sabetha. The boys employed in the store enjoyed most cordial relations with the McKnights and felt a kinship with them.
Mr. McKnight sold his store in 1912 and retired from active business. He passed away April 6, 1945. Since his death, Mrs. McKnight has tried to overcome her loneliness by devoting herself to making others happy. She has made generous bequests to her church the city library and other benevolent enterprises. All through her illness and original sufferings she has found ways to bring happiness to old friends and has been most appreciative to all that was done for her comfort. Truly, "She hath done what she could!"
Mrs. McKnight was the last of her family. One brother, Harry died in his youth, the parents some years ago and her brother, Frank, Jan. 18, 1941.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning, Feb. 19, at the Congregational church, of which she has long been an active member conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Elmer E. Erickson. Jack Mock sang, "Ave Maria" and Mrs. Virgil Brown sang "Going Home" Miss Gertrude Braun was accompanist casket bearers were Charley Ott, G. R. Sewell, Robert Benson, Forrest Ayers, George Althouse, Ollie Yost, Roy Cashman and Paul McNary.
Members of the P.E.O. Chapter of which Mrs. McKnight was a member attended in a group. Many lovely flowers gave tribute to the affection in which the deceased was held.
Interment was beside the grave of her husband in the Sabetha Cemetery.
