Dale W. Wood, 83, of Grand Island died Friday, April 25, 2014, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, surrounded by his family and friends in a room full of love.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 2, at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Inurnment will be at a later date at Westlawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Wood was born Feb. 21, 1931, in Central City to Walter and Argyle (Schultz) Wood. He grew up in Central City. Dale was united in marriage to Beverly Davis on Sept. 8, 1951, in Grand Island. He spent his adult life in the Grand Island area. He served in the National Guard for four years. Dale worked in construction and as a truck driver most of his life. He owned Wood Brothers Land Leveling with his brothers in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Then he worked as a truck driver for National By-Products, then Platte River By-Products, retiring in 2000.

After retirement, he worked summers for Nebraska Game and Parks doing maintenance at Mormon Island and surrounding parks until 2011, when he retired completely. He enjoyed woodworking and puttering in his shop. He loved evenings spent on the back porch watching the squirrels, listening to the birds and visiting with loved ones. Dale and Beverly enjoyed summer camping trips with their kids and grandkids. Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with all of his family, regardless of where they were or what they were doing.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly; two daughters and a son-in-law, Diana Rogers of Grand Island, and Gayle and Dennis Miller of Grand Island; a son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Ruth Wood of Grand Island; a granddaughter, Heather Monson and her husband, Andrew, and their children, Konner and Madsen of Grand Island; a granddaughter, Crystal Miller and her fiance, Adam Wolfe, of Lincoln; a grandson, Adam Miller and his wife, Jama Obermiller, and their children, Austin, Addison, Emery, Barret and Cutler of Grand Island; four grandsons, Jim and his wife, Lorri Rogers, of Grand Island; Jeff and his wife, Amber Rogers, of Broken Bow; Jason and his wife, Holly Rogers, of Scottsbluff, and Justin and his wife, Jenn Rogers, of Brookfield, Colo.; a granddaughter, Rhonda Rogers of Columbus; five stepgrandchildren and their families; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Darletta Wood of Grand Island, Dean and Gertrude Wood of Central City, Gary and Julia Wood of Grand Island, and Tom and Rena Wood of Whittier, Calif.; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Joan Bushhousen of Grand Island, Carol Bushhousen of Elba, and Janet and Rick Schneider of Tampa, Fla.

Dale also will be greatly missed by his special four-legged baby, Susie, and the grand-dogs he enjoyed so much.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James A. Wood; a son-in-law, James E. Rogers, Sr.; and three brothers-in-law, Allard Bushhousen, Terry Bushhousen and Eddy Gardner.
