Juan José Antonio Bonifacio de la Guerra y Carrillo was born at Monterey, Alta California, New Spain, at 3:00 A.M. May 14, 1805, and was baptized in the Presidio Chapel (San Carlos) later that same day (SC Baptism 02500). He was the son of José Antonio de la Guerra y Noriega and María Antonia Juliana Carrillo y Lugo. Shortly after enlisting in the Mexican Army he married María Concepción Ortega y López (BP Baptism 00336) at the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel November 23, 1824 (BP Marriage 00128). On March 9, 1839 he received a grant for Rancho de los Alamos. José Antonio and his wife Concepción are found living in Santa Bárbara County in the 1850, 1852, 1860, and 1870 census records. His ownership of Rancho los Alamos was filed with the U.S. land Commission in 1854 and he lived just long enough to see his title confirmed on September 12, 1872. He died 6 months later. According to Santa Barbara County Wills & Probate, with his wife Antonia as executrix, it appears he died about April 1873 in Santa Barbara County where his will was recorded June 28, 1873. Antonia lost title to what remained of Rancho los Alamos, 3,402 acres, following a Sheriff's sale on the steps of the Santa Barbara County courthouse on December 16, 1879 (Morning Press [Santa Barbara, CA], Vol. VIII, No. 115, Dec. 8, 1879; 3:6).
