Lars L. Aarstad, 86 of rural Hiawatha, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, Kansas. Lars was born on June 23, 1927 in Hauge I Dalene, Norway to Thorvald and Ingebjorg Line Aarstad. Lars came to the United States at the age of 18, at the request of an uncle, to help farm in rural Hiawatha. During the summer months he farmed and during the winter months, he worked at a packing house in St. Joseph, Mo. On October 30, 1949 he married the love of his life, Lozene Massey, at Zion Lutheran Church in Everest. Lars and Lozene had three sons, Michael, Wayne and Bruce. Upon the death of his uncle, Lars was able to acquire the land he had farmed for many years and he and Lozene lived there for over 60 years. Lars returned to Norway four times after his move to the United States. These trips were highlights of their life together. One of the greatest joys in Lars' life were his grandchildren. Fun times included riding tractors, motorcycles, going down to the creek to skip rocks and look for crawdads and playing lots of games. Lars was a member of the Everest Zion Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Lozene; son, Michael (Dixie) of Andover, Kansas; six grandchildren, Richmond Aarstad of Meriden, Amy Hankins of Andover, Kari Torrez of Topeka, Matt Aarstad of Wichita, Justin Aarstad and Mindy Erickson of St. Joseph, Mo.; twelve great grandchildren; one brother, Oystein Aarstad and several nieces and nephews in Norway. Lars and Lozene also experienced much grief when two of their sons passed away, Bruce in 2003 and Wayne in 2011, as well as granddaughter, Krystal in 2004. The family will greet friends on Sunday, April 27, 2014 from 1:00 to 2:30 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. A private graveside will be held following the visitation on Sunday afternoon at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery north of Everest, Kansas.
