Darr Albert Dockhorn Sr., 77, of Grand Island died Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Terry Brandenburg will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dockhorn was born Nov. 5, 1936, in Arcadia to Glen and Ella (Woodworth) Dockhorn.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Arlene; children and their spouses, Darlene Dockhorn of Grand Island, Shari and Steve Nunn of Aurora, Darr Dockhorn II, Tammy and Troy Nelson, Kurt and Jackie Dockhorn, Tiffani and Robert Williams, and Shawn and Becca Dockhorn, all Grand Island; 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Wid Dockhorn of Lincoln; and two sisters, Pearl Norton of Lincoln and Joan Weber of Loveland, Colo.

Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He grew up in Comstock and graduated from high school in 1954. He was united in marriage to Arlene Schinkel on Feb. 14, 1959, in Grand Island. The couple made their home in Grand Island, where they raised their eight children. He was a mechanic at Sperry New Holland from 1976-1996. He worked for the Hall County Roads Department and then worked at Hall County Park for several years.

Darr was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church. He enjoyed gardening, watching old western shows, taking drives in the country and mechanic work. He collected John Wayne memorabilia. His greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family.

Darr was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.
