Ellouise Wadsworth (Skinner) Beatty died on April 20, 2014. She was born March 26, 1928 in Yakima, Washington, to Henry H. and Dora Davis Skinner. While in high school, Ellouise worked in the local orchards and canneries during the summers, and used her earnings for flying lessons, obtaining her private pilot's license at age 16.
Ellouise graduated from the University of Denver in 1950 and earned a Master of Sacred Music degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1952. Briefly in New Jersey and Massachusetts, and for over two decades in Madison, Ellouise was organist / choir director at many churches and one synagogue, including the Wesley Foundation, Grace Episcopal Church, First Unitarian Society, Saint Thomas Aquinas, and Temple Beth El. In 1985 Ellouise earned a Masters degree in Epidemiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and worked as a programmer and database manager in the UW Department of Medicine until her retirement in 1992.
When Ellouise came to Madison for a job interview in 1954, Marvin Beatty was on the interview committee. They were married for nearly 58 years, raising four daughters.
Ellouise had a quiet zest for life. She was never daunted by challenges or unusual opportunities to learn about the world, including living in Brazil for two and a half years when their children were young. She and Marvin traveled to 39 countries and welcomed numerous international visitors into their home. They hosted and traveled as members of the Friendship Force of Wisconsin, Walking the World, American Field Service, and on their own. Ellouise loved classical and choral music and sang in the UW Choral Union for decades. She was a longtime member of the League of Women Voters, AFS, and a neighborhood book group. She delivered Meals on Wheels for years and was a consistent blood donor to the American Red Cross.
Ellouise is survived by her husband Marvin Beatty; daughters Julie Beatty (Andrew Yee), Melbourne, Australia; Janet Beatty (David Eckhardt), Boulder, Colorado; Jenny Beatty, Madison, Wisconsin; and Joy Nelson (Kevin), Eagle River, Wisconsin; and grandchildren Beatty, Walker, and Lexi Nelson; Theodora Beatty; and Lauren Eckhardt. Ellouise was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Henry H. Skinner, Jr.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Dr. David T. Watts and the Oakwood Village staff at Covenant Oaks and Hebron Oaks, and to the staff at the UW Carbone Cancer Center, for their skilled and compassionate care of Ellouise.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday April 25 at Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ in Madison, WI.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin, 517 North Segoe Road, Madison, WI 53705, or to Union Theological Seminary, 3041 Broadway, New York, NY 10027.
