Margaret A. Perry, 71, of 4330 Onondaga Blvd. and formerly of South Onondaga was pronounced dead on arrival Friday at Community-General Hospital after becoming ill at her home.
Mrs. Perry was born in Syracuse. She retired in 1977 from the Syracuse City School District as the district's elementary supervisor for kindergarten through third grade. Mrs. Perry joined the school district as a teacher in 1944 and taught elementary grades at several schools. She was appointed the district's supervisor of primary grades in 1961.
Mrs. Perry was a 1941 graduate of Syracuse Normal School and a 1948 magna cum laude graduate of Syracuse University, where she received her master's degree in 1960. She taught at a one-room schoolhouse in Skaneateles from 1941 to 1942 and also taught in Nedrow before coming to the city school district. Mrs. Perry also taught summer courses at Oswego State Teachers College. Her husband, Donald A., died in 1987.
Mrs. Perry was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Syracuse, the Association for Childhood Education, the New York State Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the Syracuse Administrator and Supervisors Association, the New York State Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the International Reading Association. She also served on the Mayor's Commission for Youth. She served with the WAVES as a chief petty officer during World War II.
Surviving are a son, Richard T. of DeWitt; three brothers, John Cusick of Nedrow, James Cusick of Marietta and Richard Cusick of West Winfield, Mass.; four sisters, Virginia Young of Camillus, Beverly Tillis of Vero Beach, Fla., Janet Kellogg of Canastota and Nancy Lehman of Boston, Mass.; and a granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Greenleaf Funeral Home. Burial will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens, DeWitt.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 503 W. Onondaga St.
Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Elmcrest Children's Center.
