Memorials: American Red Cross, 1515 S. Sylvania Ave., Fort Worth, Texas 76111.
George M. Esselman , D.O., was born Jan. 5, 1917, in McBride, Mo. He was the second of nine children born to Patrick and Lillian Anderson Esselman . He grew up in McBride and Perryville, Mo. Being inspired by the local doctor, George endeavored to become a doctor himself. He graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia and then from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Together, George and Beth would be blessed with three children.
Upon graduation from medical school, Dr. Esselman practiced family medicine to do his residency in internal medicine. He became a specialist in internal medicine and established a long and fruitful practice of medicine in Dayton, Ohio. After nearly 20 years in private practice, Dr. Esselman returned to Ohio State University to specialize in medical education. In 1972, he took a position with the then-just starting Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine as director of medical education. Dr. Esselman was instrumental in the founding and development of the college and its present relation with the North Texas State University. Dr. Esselman graduated the school's first class of doctors from a converted bowling alley.
George enjoyed gardening, which he did mainly because he enjoyed sharing the fruits of his garden with neighbors and friends. He served on the Fort Worth mayor's commission that developed the homeless in Fort Worth. He was very involved in the Impaired Physician Program that treated substance abuse in the medical profession, often writing and lecturing on the subject. George was an intelligent, energetic and devoted physician. He was a loving husband and father. And most of all, he was a Christian man whose faith in his Lord was steadfast.
Survivors: Son, George Douglas Esselman , a pilot for Delta Air Lines, who with his wife, Debra, lives now in Colleyville; daughter, Karen Beth Martin, a nurse at All Saints Hospital, who lives in Benbrook; and a son, Gregory Watt Esselman , a Presbyterian minister, who with his wife, Elaine, lives now in Springfield, Mo. George is also survived by two granddaughters, Angela Beth Christian and Summer Leigh Bartlett; one grandson, Andrew Douglas Esselman ; and a great-grandchild on the way.
