The community was saddened to learn of the death of Ernest E. Alsleben, "Ernie," as he was better known to all who knew him. Mr. Alsleben had been ill with cancer for several months but his spirits were high and he carried on his life's endeavors until the last. His hopes remained positive as he wanted to be with his family but he entered the Hutchinson community hospital Tuesday, Aug. 7, and passed away there Thursday, Aug. 16. He attained the age of 67-years, three months and 17-days.
Funeral for Ernest E. Alsleben was held Sunday, Aug. 19, 1984 at two o'clock from the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glencoe. Officiating was Rev. Layton Lemke and the organist was Brian Jensen. The congregation sang, "What A Friend We Have in Jesus," "Have Thine Own Way," and "A Mighty Fortress."
The casket bearers were Roger Donnay, Robert Sommers, Gordon Krumrey, Martin Rose, Maynard Kirchoff and Orlan Flasta. Interment was in the Glencoe Cemetery, Glencoe.
Ernest Edwin Alsleben was born April 30, 1917 to William and Frieda (Luehrs) Alsleben on the farm that he has l lived on all of his life. He was baptized May 28, 1917 in First Lutheran Church by Pastor Kolbe. Ernest attended the District 65 School through the 8th grade and then he attended Stevens Seminary from where he graduated in 1935.
Mr. Alsleben farmed all of his life and he was active and well known for his sales of machinery, apples, watermelon, seeds and popcorn, etc.
Ernie Alsleben was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher for 15-years, and as a member of the Finance Committee for 8-years. He was also active in LLL for many years.
Mr. Alsleben has been married for the last 41-years to Lorene Penk. They were married June 22, 1943 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Stewart, MN by Pastor M.A. Schulz.
He pursued other outside interests such as 4-H, Meal on Wheels, Holstein World Association and McLeod County Holstein Association, McLeod County Historical Society and FFA where Mr. Alsleben was named an Honorary Chapter Farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene, of Glencoe, his children: Andrew of Glencoe, Mrs. Arlene Groskreutz (husband, Robert) of Litchfield, Aaron (wife, Carol) of Glencoe, Mrs. Anita Renstrom (husband, Randy) of Alexandria, Arnold (wife, Joyce) of Glencoe, Mrs. Amy McKnight (husband, Willy) of Broadway, N.C., Mrs. Angela Danielson (husband, Craig) of Dassel, Adam and Alan of Glencoe and one adopted son, Arthur (Jim Reed).
Ernie is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Esther Arlt (husband, Arnold) of Glencoe and he has eleven grandchildren.
Mr. Alsleben was preceded to the grave by his parents and brother Elmer.
Relatives and friends also paid their last respects at visitation at the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel, Glencoe.
