The daughter of Samuel John "Sam" Whaley and Rosa "Rosie" Kean, Mary and her siblings lived with her mother and father in Doniphan Township, Ripley County, Missouri at the turn of the century. After her parents divorced, Mary then lived her mother and step-father, Cleveland "Cleve" Bogue in Madison County, Illinois.

Mary married James Walsh on 20 Jan 1927. The ceremony was officiated by Justice Grossman.

The couple did not have any children as she died at her home less than 4 months after her marriage. Her death came at the age of 32 years, 2 months and 24 days.

She was survived by her husband, James; her mother, Rosie Bogue; 3 sisters, Allie, Gracie and Dollie; 1 brother, Joe; and 1 half-brother, Charles.

Mary's body was transported to Jersey County to the home of her mother where visitation was held. Funeral services were conducted at the Pentecostal Church on 18 May 1927.
