Captain Joseph Saunders died in Cape Vincent Friday after a short illness. Captain Saunders was born at Prosemorst, England, Oct. 15, 1835, and came to this country with his parents when he was five years of age, on the ship Philadelphia, and settled at Mud Creek, about four miles from Cape Vincent. Captain Saunders started sailing when he was 17 years old, and at the age of 20 was made captain of the schooner Clayton Belle and afterwards was master of the schooner Polly M. Rogers for many years. Of late years he had acted as polt for boats from Duluth to Montreal, having
masters and pilots' papers for the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence river. During the past summer Captain Saunders assisted in piloting the large steamer Alcott of Oswego from Cape Vincent to Alexandria Bay.
