Herbert Walton "Herbie" Ramsey, Jr., 71, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2014 At Wake Med. Herbie was born on October 11, 1942 in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania to the Mamie Frances Todd Ramsey and the late Herbert Walton Ramsey, Sr. Herbie graduated from Wallace-Rose Hill High School and went on to the US Coast Guard where he developed his firefighting skills. He retired as manager with 27 years of service with Red Star Oil Company. Herbie was widely known for his devotion and service to Wendell-Holmes Rural Fire Department where he served in many capacities, including Fire Chief and had retired as Assistant Fire Chief with 52 years of service. He never met a stranger and had friends far and wide.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, April 21, 2014 at Wendell Baptist Church, 3651 Wendell Blvd., Wendell, NC 27591. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery with Full Fireman Honors.

He is survived by his wife: Doris Parrish Ramsey; children: Angela Kearney, Mike Capps, Lynn Capps (Marie), Diadera Privette (Dwayne), Samantha Creech (Kevin); mother: Mamie Frances Todd Ramsey; brothers: Warren Ramsey (Carol), Dowell Ramsey (Martha); 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; a host of special nieces and nephews and their families.

In addition to his father, Herbie was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jessica Hope Denton.
