Laura Mae Black, Winterset

Laura Mae Black, 95, died from complications of a stroke Sept. 17, 2000 at Winterset Care Center South.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, Sept. 20) at 10:30 a.m. at Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with the Rev. Bill Branson officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Laura Black was born Sept. 16, 1905, in Madison County to William J. and Sadie E. (Ford) Smith. A 1924 graduate of Winterset High School, she had taught school, had been a telephone operator for St. Charles and had been employed by Easter's Grocery and Montross Pharmacy in Winterset. She married Walter D. Brandt in 1927 in Madison County. Following Walter's death she later married Frank Black on Feb. 15, 1943, in Winterset. Laura was a member of the Columbian Club, Order of the Eastern Star Model Chapter 174 of St. Charles and the First United Methodist Church in Winterset.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, two brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by a son, Donal E. Brandt (wife Ppatricia) of West des Moines; a daughter, Nadene A WeMott (husband Walter) of McKinney, Texas; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
