Joseph Wayne Haws
1925 - 2014
VETERAN

Early Life: Wayne was born June 21, 1925, in Mesa, Arizona, to James William and Ina Pauline Despain Haws. Wayne was the seventh of eight children, all of whom have preceded him in death. Wayne spent a happy early childhood in Mesa, Arizona. When he was only eight years old, his father died unexpectedly. Following the death of his father, Wayne, with his mother and siblings, moved to Provo, Utah. Although he was a good student, throughout his life his real passions were sports and hunting with his brothers.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: During World War II, Wayne joined the United States Navy and was assigned to the battleship USS Iowa. His lifetime of hunting, helped him excel as a marksman. He was therefore tasked as the pointer man on a quad four 20mm anti-aircraft weapon. He witnessed history while standing on the deck of his ship, which was berthed next to the USS Missouri when the peace treaty that ended World War II was signed. Shortly after his release from military service, Wayne enlisted in God's Army and was called to the Eastern States Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Due to health issues which were complicated by the humidity in that area, he was reassigned to the Western States Mission. It was there that he met the love of his life, Marjorie Ann Pennock, who became his eternal sweetheart on October 9, 1952, in the Logan Utah Temple. Wayne then continued his schooling at BYU, graduating with a degree in elementary education. He taught school in Idaho and Utah, before he was encouraged to apply for a position as a seminary teacher in the Church Education System. It was in this position that Wayne found his true calling in life! Wayne was in his element when he was testifying of Jesus Christ and of the great Atonement. He was a natural teacher, motivating his students to become as excited about learning as he was about teaching. His grandchildren have fond memories of being offered a Snicker's bar for naming the tribes of Israel, the prophets of the dispensations, reciting D&C 13, or even for swimming across the pool without taking a breath. Wayne and Marge made their home in Mapleton, Utah; Twin Falls, Idaho; and Payson, Utah. He later took a position teaching Institute at Cerritos College in Southern California, where he was instrumental in starting "The most fantastic, the most enthusiastic, the most on-fire, un-apathetic singing group in America (during the tumultuous Vietnam era), the Grand Land Singers!" He was a great influence on those "Young People", who nick-named him Captain Moroni, because of his love of God, family and country. After retirement, Wayne and Marge moved back to Utah, which they always considered home. There, he returned to work, driving the shuttle van for the Chevy dealer in Provo. He was back to teaching! He had a new captive audience several times a day, and used that time influencing others with his testimony and good nature. Joseph "Wayne" Haws moved on to the next life April 14, 2014.
Survived By: His dear wife, Marjorie; their seven children: Holly Jean (Gene Wilson), Karie (Dave Bourne), Steven Wayne (Denise), Laurie (Jerry Duclos), Connie (David Pixton), James Joseph (Kathy), and Krista Rachel (Louis "Sonny" Pope); 32 grandchildren and their spouses; and 32 great-grandchildren who love, adore and revere him as a great patriot and patriarch.
