Cecil Eugene Apgar, age 76, of Texico and formerly of Mattoon passed away at 6:50 p.m. Saturday Dec. 11, 2010, at White Oak Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Cecil was born on April 22, 1934, in Bluford, a son of John W. Apgar and Eva Lela (Baker) Apgar. He married Earleen Mezo on Nov. 7, 1954, in Bluford, at his parents home; and she survives in Texico.


Mr. Apgar served his country in the United States Army overseas in Germany. He worked as a security guard at R.R. Donnelly and Sons manufacturing in Mattoon and later as a truck driver for Direct Motor Freight in Mt. Vernon, from which he retired. He was a member of West Long Prairie Christian Church of Waltonville.

Mr. Apgar is survived by his wife, Earleen Apgar of Texico; three children, Cheryl Foltz and husband James of Mattoon, Steven Apgar and wife Becky of Mt. Vernon and Michele Peyton and husband Ron L. Peyton of Belle Rive; and by five grandchildren, Cherimy, Nathan, Donny, Kassidy and Kadence.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Amanda Nicole Peyton; three brothers, Donald Apgar, James Apgar and Carl Apgar; and an infant sister, Barbara Lou Apgar.

Graveside Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday at Bethel Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Tanner Green officiating. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
