A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, at Lee's Chapel United Methodist Church, 2303 Lee's Chapel Road in Greensboro, with The Reverend Carol Williams-Gilbert officiating. A private committal service will be held prior to the memorial service at the church.
James was the loving husband for almost 63 years of Frances Rudd Thomas, of the home, and son of Lacy Thomas and Clara Williams Thomas of Burlington, N.C. James was a graduate of Williams High School. James was affectionately known as "Jimmy" by his family and friends.
Prior to World War II and Pearl Harbor, Jimmy received his wings in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and then joined the United States Navy, where he flew and lead a squadron of PBY's in the Pacific Theatre of the war. He received air medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, and was a flight instructor during the Korean War.
Mr. Thomas was a retired purchasing agent for AT&T Lucent. He was a very dedicated member of the Lee's Chapel United Methodist Church and will be greatly missed by his family, church family and friends.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his sons, James R. Thomas and wife, Emily, of Charleston, S.C., and Michael W. Thomas and daughter-in-law, Mary Claire, of Greensboro, N.C. Six grandchildren were his pride and joy: John R. Thomas and wife, Katie, of Gainesville, Florida, Christopher Thomas of Brooklyn, N.Y., Claire and Cristin Thomas of Raleigh, N.C., Michael W. Thomas, II of Aspen, Colo., and Katie Thomas of Greensboro, N.C.
