Ruth E. Vermeer, 94 years of age, of Sterling, Nebraska died at the Johnson County Hospital in Tecumseh, Nebraska on Thursday evening, August 18, 2005. She was born on August 23, 1910 at Bennett, Nebraska and graduated from Syracuse High School at Syracuse, Nebraska. She lived in Bennett, Burchard, Syracuse, Liberty and Sterling, Nebraska before her marriage to Orril Vermeer on April 19, 1933. They lived and farmed south of Sterling until moving to town in 1976. She was a member of the Silver Ridge Extension Club and the Pinochle Club both of Sterling, Nebraska. She was also a member of the Sterling United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years, was active in the United Methodist Women and the church quilting group. She enjoyed needlework, quilting, crocheting, playing cards and music. She had made an afghan for each of her grandchildren, great-grandchidren and great-great-grand- children.

Survivors include her husband, Orril of Sterling, Nebraska. Two daughters, Mavis Brinkman of Lincoln, Nebraska and Carol VanDeWalle and her husband Paul of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Four sons, Lynn Vermeer and his wife Carol of Lincoln, Nebraska, John Vermeer and his wife Wanda of Glenwood, Arkansas, LaVerne Vermeer and his wife Betty and David Vermeer and his wife Janet all of Sterling, Nebraska. 19 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. One sister, Genevieve Ellis and her husband Harold of Albuquerque, New Mexico. One sister-in-law, Ruth Cox of Cortland, Kansas. Many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Bertha Borland Cox, one brother Richard Cox, one sister Audrey Tucker, one son-in-law Marlin Brinkman, one granddaughter Cynthia Brinkman Landenberger, an infant grandson Stephen Vermeer, an infant granddaughter Paula VanDeWalle, an infant great-granddaughter Tessa Ruth VanDeWalle and one sister-in-law Vida Curtis.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M. on Sunday, August 21, 2005 at the United Methodist Church of Sterling, Nebraska with Rev. Evie Gulachi-Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Sterling Cemetery of Sterling, Nebraska. A family prayer service for the immediate family will be held at 1:15 P.M. in the church basement. A memorial has been established to the United Methodist Church of Sterling, Nebraska with the Zink-Fox Funeral Home in charge. The body will lie in state at the Zink-Fox Funeral Home of Sterling, Nebraska on Saturday from 8:00 A.M. until 9:00 P.M., on Sunday from 8:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. and at the church one hour preceding the services.
