Fred C. Barber was born in Adams county, Illinois, on Feb. 13, 1857 and is the son of William and Eliza Hammond Barber. He was reared on the home farm until 16 years of age when, in 1873, the family moved to Nodaway county and located in Green Township, where they bought a fine farm in the SW part of the township.


In October, 1883, Mr. Barber married Laura Grigsby, daughter of Capt. John Grigsby. After their marriage Mr. Barber bought the home farm from his parents. In 1892, they moved to their present farm (referring to 1910), of 480 acres. He also owned additional acreage in Monroe Township.


Three children were born to this union, namely: John W., Lillis and William F. Lillis died in infancy.


Mrs. Barber passed away on December 6, 1902, and one June 1, 1905, he married Viola McNutt. Mr. Barber passed away on April 27, 1937 at the age of 82. He was a widower, surviving both of his wives.


Note: According to Mr. Barber's MO Death Certificate, he passed away in 1939.

"Frederick C. Barber, 82 years of age, well-known farmer Shorthorn cattle breeder, died suddenly at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon following a heart attack at the home of his son, W.F. Barber, 3 1/2 miles southwest of Skidmore.


Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. C.A. Sauceman of Maryville, MO., at 10:30 o'clock tomorrow morning at the Burr Oak Church. Rev. Sauceman is a former Pastor of the church. Burial will be in Burr Oak cemetery.


Mr. Barber was born in McComb, Illinois, February 10, 1857. He was the son of William and Eliza Hammond Barber. The family came to Nodaway county, MO when Mr. Barber was 10 years of age. The trip (from Illinois) was made in a covered wagon. They settled in the southwestern part of Green township.


In October 1883, Mr. Barber married Laura Grigsby of Burr Oak community. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Barber; John W. Barber, now of Kansas City, KS; and Lillis and W.F. Barber. The daughter died in infancy. A brother, William Barber, Okema, OK, and six grandchildren survive. Mrs. Barber died December 6, 1902.


Mr. Barber was a member of the Burr Oak Church and was instrumental in rebuilding the church. He served as superintendent of the Sunday school for a number of years.


He and his son, William F. Barber had been engaged in the breeding of Shorthorn cattle for 30 years. Their annual cattle sales attracted buyers from nearly every state in the Union.


Mr. and Mrs. John Barber and son, Kansas City, KS, will arrive this afternoon for the funeral."
