Having taken ill during the ocean voyage to France during World War I, William A. H. Dempsey died the day following his debarkation in that country in 1918. Born in 1892, a member of the "Moxley family", William was adopted and reared by Willis H. Dempsey and his wife, Mary Belle Dempsey. At the time of his death, he was a member of Company 16, C. P. Replacement DFT Engineers, according to the inscription on the tombstone marking his place of burial in the Middle Creek (Negro) Cemetery in Washington Township.
