S. L. Girl, 10, Dies of Burns

Burns over her entire body proved fatal for ten-year-old Karen Smith.

She died at 1:25 a.m. Sunday, ten hours after an exploding jug of gasoline sent a flash fire racing through the upstairs apartment of Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Smith at 517 Somerby St. (740 West.)

Mrs. Vounes Black Smith, her mother, seriously burned while trying to get back inside to rescue Karen, had improved somewhat. She was listed in "fair" condition Monday at Salt Lake General Hospital.

A year-old baby, Kirkland, was still in "poor" condition. He was rescued by his mother in her first dash thrugh a wall of flames.

Mr. Smith and a daughter, Linda, 9, were treated or minor burns and released from the hospital. A fourth child, Dennis, 7, was not at home when the tragedy struck.

The parents each raced through the flames with one child but were unable to fight their way back inside for Karen. Firemen brought her out, too late to save her.

Karen Black Smith was born in Salt Lake City June 10. She was a fifth grade student at Riverside School. Surviving besides her parents, sister, and two brothers are three grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. David P. Black and Mrs. Grace Smith, all of Salt Lake City.
