Commander Clair W. (Butch) Sebring, Jr. USN (Ret) died April 8, 2014. He was born February 29, 1920 near the small town of Cherry Tree in western Pennsylvania. Butch graduated from Cherry Tree High School in 1937 and enlisted in the US Navy in 1938 as a Seaman Apprentice at $21.00 a month. After Boot Camp at Newport, RI, he went to Communications School in San Diego and became a radio operator.
During WW II he served on three ships, the USS Chicago, USS Houston, and the USS Yorktown. In 1941 he earned his wings at Pensacola and served as an enlisted pilot for two years. He was extremely proud of being a Silver Eagle. He was commissioned as an officer in 1943. He participated in the Battle of Midway and the Guadalcanal invasion in the Pacific and spent hundreds of hours flying antisub patrols in the Atlantic. CDR Sebring escorted the battleship USS Iowa for eleven hours when it carried President Roosevelt to Tehran in 1943.
Butch attended the University of Pennsylvania and was a graduate of The Naval War College at Newport, RI.
In 1943 Butch married Betty, a hometown girl and they had one wonderful child, Judy, in 1947. Butch and his family travelled as he followed his Navy career and finally settled in Coconut Creek, FL after his retirement in 1969. Butch loved gardening, especially roses, and was President of the Fort Lauderdale Men's Garden Club for two years during the 70's.
Following the death of Betty, Butch moved to Aston Gardens and spent his time making new friends, growing roses, doing some travelling, some gambling and catching up on his reading. He is preceded in death by his wife Betty and their only grandchild, Michael Buonauro. Left behind to cherish his memory is his daughter Judy and her husband Frank Buonauro, and his sister-in-law, Verna Wilson and many nieces and nephews. Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday April 18, 2014 at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, 200 West Copans Road, Pompano Beach. All friends are welcome. Butch has asked in lieu of flowers that donations be made in his name to the Red Cross.
