Maxine Minnie King, 90, of Sedalia, died on March 4, 2013, at Sylvia Thompson Residential Center in Sedalia, MO. She was born October 3, 1922 in Plentywood, MT, to the late William Otto and Eunice Dodge Grother. She was baptized in Cooperstown Lutheran Church, Cooperstown, ND, on November 12, 1922. On July 22, 1945, Maxine married Glenn Lloyd King, in Sedalia, at Epworth Methodist Church. Glenn preceded her in death on January 26, 2003.
Maxine was a 1940 graduate of Smith Cotton High School, and a 1941 graduate of Central Business College. She worked at Producers Produce, Air Service Commercial in Washington DC, and Sedalia Office of Employment Security retiring on February 1, 1983.
She was a Charter and Life member of Bothwell Hospital Auxiliary, and also a member of the Business and Professional Women, Sedalia Country Club, Elks Ladies Club, Sedalia Boat Club, Bowling Leagues, Square Dance Club, AARP, State Retirement Organization, Jolly Elders and United Methodist Women.
Maxine was a people person and never met a stranger. Her husband liked to build houses. They built two in Sedalia and one at the Lake of the Ozarks. Maxine was in charge of bringing the proper tools and decorating and watering the new lawns.
After retiring in 1983, they spent six months each year between Sun City, Arizona and Sedalia. They purchased a home in Sun City where they lived for 18 years. They joined a small country club where they enjoyed playing golf, the dances, card playing and dining with friends.
Maxine returned to Sedalia in June 2003, and became a faithful member of First United Methodist Church and volunteered at church affairs. She also enjoyed cruises to Alaska and Cancun and the dinner theater in Kansas City.
She moved to Winchester Meadows Retirement September 1, 2006 and transferred to Assisted Living February 1, 2011. After suffering a stroke in October 2013, she moved to Sylvia Thompson Residential Center.
She is survived by two nieces: Sharon (Carl) Reque, of Raymore, MO, Jan (Ron) Huhman, of Sedalia; one nephew, William K. (Brenda) Grother, of Raymore, MO; sister-in-law, Louise Grother; four great-nieces: Heather (Mark) Croucher, Bethany (Wesley) Mullen, Mandi (Ty) Harrell, Tiffany Huhman; four great-nephews: Zachary Reque, Bret (Jessica) Grother, Chad (Jennifer) Huhman and Joe Huhman; 13 great-great nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley, and brother, William "Bud" Grother.
Memorial services will be 11 am, Monday, March 11, 2013, at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mark Croucher officiating. Visitation will be 10:30 am until service time and immediately following the service. Committal service will be 11 am, Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Memorial Park Cemetery.
