Stanley S. Barry, age 87, of Madison, died at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Rosewood Care Center in Swansea.
He was born on Dec. 31, 1913, in Madison, the son of the late Joseph and Antonia Barry.
He married Eva "Dolly" Thomas on April 19, 1947. She survives.
Also surviving are two sisters: Mary Smoltz of Madison and Josephine Stelmaszek of Lowell, Ind.; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Michael Barry; and a brother: Michael Barry.
Mr. Barry was a butcher for Madison Packing. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was a Purple Heart recipient during the Rhineland Campaign in World War II, was a Prisoner of War, and a recipient of three Bronze Stars. His memberships included the Madison American Legion, Eagles Lodge, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Madison, the Granite City V.F.W. and St. Stanislaus Lodge in Madison.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. A prayer service will be recited at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. Steve Janowski officiating.
Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Edwardsville.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Lupus Foundation.
