John H Swearingen was a school teacher, lawyer and a prominent member of the First United Methodist Church in Opelika, AL.

He was born in Dooly Cty, Georgia, the son of Thomas Van Swearingen and Nancy Miller.
He was a lawyer working in downtown Opelika.

He married Zuleika A. Harrison (also referred to as Williams) on October 5, 1871.

He died in Opelika on Oct 3, 1979 according to church records.
