Services 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2014 at Burton Avenue Baptist Church, 900 Burton Avenue in Waterloo.

Visitation 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel and an hour prior to the services on Friday at the Church.

Burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Velma M. Nichols, age 72, of Elk Run Heights, died Sunday, April 6, 2014 at Covenant Medical Center of complications of COPD and broken heart syndrome.

She was born October 23, 1941 in Waterloo, the daughter of Merle Clarence and Eva Violet (Johnston) Scobee. Velma attended Waterloo East High School. She married Dale R. Nichols on July 1, 1960 at Burton Avenue Baptist Church in Waterloo, the first couple married in the new church. Dale preceded her in death on March 15, 2014.

Velma had formerly worked at the A & W Drive Inn in Evansdale, the Y Grill in Waterloo and Evansdale Pharmacy. She was a member of Burton Avenue Baptist Church. Velma enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her family. She liked cooking, organizing and was fond of drawing. Velma loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Terri Derifield of Elk Run Heights; 6 grandchildren, Tim (Cori) Derifield of Missouri, Daniel Derifield of Greene, IA, Dana Graveman, Tina, Diana and David Derifield all of Waterloo; 3 great grandchildren, Sadie Derifield, Loralie and Lincoln Graveman; 2 sisters, Sharon (Wallace "Butch") Johnson of Washburn and Beverly Tweedt of Urbandale, IA; and a sister-in-law, Sandra Scobee of Cedar Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and 3 brothers, Wayne Robert Scobee, Joseph "Paul" Scobee and Larry Dean Scobee.
