JEAN HUNT NEWTON, 84, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2010 at Athens General Hospital in Athens, Georgia after suffering from a stroke and a long period of illness. Jean was born in Cordele, Crisp County, Georgia on November 22, 1925. She was the second child of four children, and daughter of Edna Bartholemew Hunt and G.M. Dallas Hunt. When she was a small child the family moved to Griffin, Georgia where she lived for approximately 63 years. She graduated from Griffin High School. After high school she briefly left Griffin to attend Middle Georgia College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia, but couldn't return home soon enough. After the War, she met her future husband in Griffin, Floyd C. Newton, Jr., and they were married on February 23, 1952 at St. George's Episcopal Church in Griffin, Georgia. In 1989, she and Floyd moved to Madison, Georgia, and lived the rest of her life at Floyd's family house "Boxwood". Jean was very close to her family and loved by all. She was a wonderful mother. She is survived by her husband, Floyd C. Newton, Jr., a brother, F.D. "Sonny" Hunt of Griffin, Georgia , two sisters, Margaret Hunt Denny of Atlanta, Georgia and Betty Hunt Crider of Thomaston, Georgia, her three children, Jennie S. Newton of Austin, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia, Floyd C. Newton III and Godfrey H. Newton of Atlanta, Georgia, and five grandchildren, Stephanie M. Newton, Amanda W. Newton, Natalie F. Newton McClain W. Newton and Walton A. Newton. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 11th at eleven o'clock in the morning at the Old Madison Cemetery in Madison, Georgia. Funeral arrangements will be handled by A.E. Carter Funeral Home, Madison, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Church of the Advent, Madison, Georgia in memory of Jean Newton. Published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on September 10, 2010
