In Friesland Thomas was a kuijper (cooper), owning a cooperage in Arum (which was then in the municipality of Wonseradeel). He married Rinske Folkerts Hofstra in Bolsward, Friesland, on 19 May 1860:

1880: Manlius Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan (farmer; 80-acre farm in section 4, East Saugatuck)
1900: between 125 & 135 Court St. (which became Scribner), Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan (real estate)
1910: 267* Crescent Ave., Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan (own income)
*The houses were renumbered in 1914.
1920: widow Rose at 417 Crescent Ave., Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan (unemployed)
In Sep 1880 Thomas bought land in section 24 of Allendale Twp., Ottawa Co., Michigan, where he farmed. In Jul 1881 he bought land in section 18 of Tallmadge Twp (this area became part of Allendale Twp. about 1882). In 1883 Thomas operated a feed mill there. In 1887 the family moved to Grand Rapids, where Thomas was listed as farmer, mason, contractor, grocer, laborer and butcher in various years of Polk's city directory. About 1900 he built the house on Crescent Ave., which is now part of the "Heritage Hill" district.
